Center News

July 21, 2014

I would like to start by thanking you for being a loyal customer of the Supply Service Center – Perry Point Operations. With over 90 years of service, we continue to strive to be your provider of choice for your medical supply needs. In this time of budget constraints throughout the federal government, SSC provides quality products at the best price possible.

Shipping Rates

For years, our policy has been for all routine CONUS orders to ship prepaid from Perry Point, Maryland. Unfortunately, due to an unprecedented rise in shipping costs over the last few years, we have been forced to alter this long-standing policy. Effective immediately, any routine CONUS orders placed with a value of less than $50 will be charged a flat $10 fee for shipping. For all routine CONUS orders with a value of $50.00 or more, shipping will remain free of charge. We would suggest that you consolidate your orders when placing them with Customer Service. If your order totals more than $50.00, but not all the items are currently available (regardless of the price of items available to ship), you will not be charged the $10.00 fee.

Medical Supply Quotes

Another change we are instituting involves when a quote is requested for medical supplies, we will honor the prices stipulated on the quote for 14 days instead of our previous policy of 30 days. After 14 days, a new quote request will be required. If there is a price increase or the product is substituted or completely unavailable, someone from our Customer Service staff will contact you.

We also respectfully ask that the following information be provided on your purchase order for the timely processing of your request:

  1. Name of Organization
  2. Address
  3. Phone Number
  4. Fax number
  5. Customer Number
  6. Purchase Order Number (if needed)
  7. Point of Contact
  8. E-mail

Please notify us of any changes in your account information so we may update your file. Your order will be processed when you fax or email your request. When possible, we ask that you please choose one mode of communicating your request to eliminate the possibility of duplicated orders.

As a reminder, we suggest that you contact Customer Service to review your account information for accuracy. Although all of your account information is very important, we ask that you please ensure that your e-mail address and point of contact is up-to-date. Our Customer Service branch can be reached at 1-800-642-0263 or via e-mail at customerservice@sscmail.psc.gov.

The most likely cause for this potential sterility issue is laboratory contamination during the most recent testing in January 2014 due to a breach of environmental controls during the testing of the product. All previous annual tests, including sterility, met specifications. The organism recovered during the sterility test, Propionibacterium species, are considered commensal bacteria on the skin and usually nonpathogenic. Theoretical exposure to this product containing such bacteria may cause medically reversible diverse events, but the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote. In addition the risk of introduction of an infection from product removal/insertion outweighs the risk of a sterility issue with this lot of product. Therefore, retrieval of the unit on a patient level is not warranted, and used product should not be returned.

We ask for your cooperation in taking the following action:

  • Please examine your inventory and if you have the recalled product in question immediately cease distribution / use.
  • If you have purchased the product from Supply Chain Management Services, fill out the “Return Response Form” and send with recall product.
  • Mark the returned product purchase from SCMS “Recall Materials Enclosed” and return to:
    ATTN: Leslie Ridgeway
    HHS Supply Chain Management Services
    Building 14
    Perry Point, MD 21902
  • Used product is not accepted for credit.

Return the affected product before July 30, 2014 to expedite processing of your return goods credit. Accounts will be credited upon receipt of the recalled product. Please note customers must reorder the ParaGard T 380A- Intrauterine Copper Contraceptive.

Safety Alert

May 19, 2014

This Safety Alert is being issued to provide additional instructions which in some cases may not be provided on some of the Baxter’s flexible solution containers. On the labeling of these products, in question, it may not include: Do not use a flexible solution container if the administration port protector is not in place prior to use.

This alert pertains only to containers that have either a blue or neutral color administration port protector.

The administration port protector serves as a sterility barrier, and is intended to be removed when the set spike is ready to be inserted into the solution port. If a port protector is not in place prior to use, sterility of the administration port may be compromised, potentially placing patients at risk of blood stream infection due to microbial contamination introduced to the fluid path.

Baxter-safety

Baxter is requesting that you take the following actions:

  • Do not use flexible solution containers if the administration port protector is not in place.
  • Please forward a copy of this Safety Alert letter to other facilities or departments within your institution to ensure that those locations are aware of this action.

We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your prompt attention to this alert. If you have any questions about this alert, please contact David Wernek, Quality Assurance Specialist at 1-800-642-2244 Ext: 1110.
